I agree that instant film photography is the future of film. That's why they need to make lens interchangeable instant cameras so we can adapt our lenses from other brands to it. For example an instant camera that can work with vintage manual focus lenses. There is a company called NONS that makes interchangeable-lens SLR instant cameras... but there has to be cheaper options and they have to be more readily available.

Hello Nico, I see you shot this video six years ago so I don't know that you will see this note. I find my self getting back into shooting film with the intention of shooting six by twelve. I have a DIY 4x5 that I made myself, (no bellows), And I am within a few days picking up the Intrepid. At the present time I only have a 75 mm. and wow it is super wide it's also really wide on my 6x9 roll back. I also plan to pick up two more lenses, likely a 90mm and a 135mm. Did you know and I am sure you must, that you can purchase half dark slides so you can shoot two 6x12 on one four by five sheet of film? Now I have a question. do you think I can pull this of With a 90mm and the 135? That is, can I get enough bellows movement with those two lenses on the Intrepid (no bag bellows)? Thanks Matt

@2:26 I was aware that many large format lenses do not resolve as well as medium format or small format lenses. However, I thought the high-quality large format lenses were equal in quality or superior in quality to small and medium format lenses.

Apart from what you say, in the M6TTL model, the knob to adjust the speed is turned in the direction that the exposure meter arrow in the viewfinder points, which is contrary to the custom of previous models (and later MP and MA), but it is more natural and intuitive.

I don't get all the negative comments by many people. They are claiming it's too expensive & better to buy a used 1970s camera. The thing is Used film cameras are not cheap & are not reliable at all. I can't give explanation for some people who might find it pleasing when their used old film camera brokes (mechanical) or just dies (electronic). Maybe they like self inflected pain 😬. Many of us don't have the knowledge to repair it ourselves when it breaks & cameras with electronics (like the canon Ae1, Nikon f3, Pentax me) need someone skilled to do so. And quite a lot of us are not lucky to have a person/store near our place that still repairs film cameras in this day & age. And how can anyone buy Leica film camera? It cost the same as a car where I'm based. So I'm really happy Pentax has launched this new film camera.

This is a camera for non-photographers. More particularly, it is for people who for whatever motivation want to shoot film photos, but do not want to learn the skills to do so. The camera substitutes a variety of automatic aperture and focus settings for manual control to ensure that a wider variety of photos can be successfully had while the user remains totally ignorant of how to take those photos. The manual focus option is more advertising as an upscale camera than anything. The focus is motorized and could have been made fully autofocus at no greater cost, but doing so would have lost a "cool factor". Most of the auto exposure setting impose either a wide open or fully closed aperture, neither of which yields an optimum imaging quality. Of the several dozen "reviews", none detail the construction of the lens, which appears to be withheld by Pentax. So it remains to be seen if it is capable of more than smaller images for digital conversion to social media. Since that is probably the goal of nearly all who will purchase the camera, that may not be an issue. Idea: Rather than worry about building another film camera more up to expectations of serious users, Pentax should consider producing a quality 35mm dedicated film scanner in the price range of $500, designed to deal with the half frame and full frame formats. That would balance well with this camera, and it might prove more popular than the camera itself. Such a scanner should easily exceed the image quality of the current fixation on using digital cameras to photo-scan film negatives while avoiding the considerable expense and difficulty of such arrangements.

Thsnk you for the review. This is the 5th or 6th review I have watched, and you were the first to mention the screw on the battery cover falling out. I am thankful to Ricoh Pentax for the effort. I hope to see more NEW film cameras. I love chrome films. Thank you again.

Nice it seems nice. I don't know how consistent it is, looking at it it seems a lot of plastic. Undoubtedly a curious camera, just for its half format. Beyond the new signs of life of Pentax, albeit under the aegis of Ricoh, I would say that for the price, absolutely for amateurs only, and the qualities, when I want to relax with analog, I hold on tightly to my Nikon F5 with all my lens park.... for the rest I have my Z8 and the Z6 as a mule. Thanks for the nice video. Best regards.

I notice a lot people posting comments that they don't like this camera etc etc, but this camera is not aimed at people ("photo nerds") looking at Nico's channel, but it's trying to attract a new younger generation who only know digital. Time will tell if it does attract them.

I like the camera very much, but not enthused about zone focusing. Seems rather archaic to have to use a tape measure to estimate the distance to anything you want to photograph. Why couldn't they just install auto or rangefinder focusing?

Hi ‘ Nice review. but it would take more time to give an indepth evaluation of some features such as the film backs. Depending on the kind of shooting you do. it can present problems that the SLX does not , and i am thinking of wedding photography in particular. There is a solution however….It was unofficially ok’d by Rollei in NJ and works….use an SLX back 120 or better yet 220 and also use the prism….Then it will be great and easy to reload on the go. I shot with the SLX from the first day it was introduced in the US and the 6000 series is even greater . Watch for the sound of the « end of roll » once you have shot a few frames on « empty » you will not forget 😀😢 You can miss it. if on tripod and in rapid shooting.

I’m from the future, June 2024. Such prescient words, Nico! I purchase a Polaroid I-2 in December 2023, which I am in love with snd find the best camera I’ve purchased in decades! I may well buy the new Pentax 17. And that is because, even at 68 years of age, and well over half a century of photographic experience through analog then digital then back to analog, one thing is abundantly clear: it’s a different world! Film is different. Processing is different. Presentation is different. And the companies that make cameras, film, chemistry, and all the important and nice accessories we need and want have to deal with the NOW - not what existed decades ago! I am excited that companies like Lomography and Mint spend hard cash on R&D, to create new analog products. It’s terrifically exciting that Polaroid and Pentax have made a commitment to put new cameras out at great risk to themselves - and done so with verve and passion and in the face of push back by so-called enthusiasts and pseudo photographers. I salute these companies who live on thin profit margins, exhibiting guts and courage beyond anything the sideline haters have - and yet with passion and determination, push forward! Thanks, Nico, for an excellent opinion video. ❤

i like intrepid for their passion for LF.. but the price point and the quality im afraid is a sore point. Why are we now as consumers ok in paying quite a bit of money (nearly 400 quid is still a lot of money people lol) for something that honestly, isnt great. Charmonix is better quality but im not sure its worth just over £1k. Ive not touched the very latest intrepid 4x5 both wood and black... but even still... after each revision... some of the same old issues still apply.. like tightening the front standard and you can still move it (good old electrical tape at the base to stop it moving works a treat).. or the rear standard not having arms or a zeroing position (does the latest have this... need to look lol) As you said in other videos... you come to know the nuances and get around them... but.. without the internet and people posting reviews... a consumer wouldnt know this. They would be buying a camera where this wouldnt be known, and maybe and i think correctly, they wouldnt expect these either! If the latest version is the best version.... why wasnt the 1st version like this in the first place?!?!?! lol ITs not rocket science in what they have done. It must be about money... being a new company needing to at least make a profit.. not knowing if it would have take up or not etc... i understand this, and as the company have grown, they have changed the build process etc.. but in all seriousness, i couldnt do what they have done if i were them. I can put this in comparison to Walker cameras... (no longer made i think) but Mike Walker produced his cameras and they were great. Not as light, but still abs but with far greater quality parts. The waiting time for a camera wasnt that much more than Intrepid when they first started. But the camera was a little more expensive than a charmonix back then (talking 10 years ago at least) but that would be right as it was more pro. At the end of the day, quality is important. The tool you use has to be enjoyable and help you in your photo making, rather than cause frustrations. And this is what i think the intrepid is.... its a camera of little frustrations. Hopefully one day they will yield a camera without any and it will be a joy to use. We have their lenses coming.. and now they have added their own double dark slides and viewing hood... and we all know about the enlarger. It is good that they are helping film... but with the price of film always going up, along with chems, or lab prices (for many dev etc at home isnt viable)... there is a lot that is great but it could be better.

Apart from contact printing... i dont hear any other reason from you really. Just my opinion :) a lot of what you said are self created issues... esp buying so many 4x5 etc.. and mean... why do you need to do that??! lol

Very true. The thing now is, as much as its a good thing that people are making 4x5.. its all about making money.. its not about giving the consumer quality and a great experience. The culture throughout a lot of the western world and in most areas of life.. the consumer isnt valued. From cameras to food and gas bills, to government decisions..... we're just the people to make someone else well off. ITs so selfish now... its not funny. How products can be made that are clearly not good... and yet sell because they know they can get away with it... its crazy. Competition is supposed to drive up standards... but the playing field now and the rules of it have changed... it doesnt matter about competition because there is no competition.... They all work the same model. The world has changed and there is no going back.
